Looking at the advantages of solar energy technology, it is easy to see that it helps to provide energy at vastly reduced rates.  Although the initial investment can be quite high, these startup costs can be recovered through the savings in your monthly utility bills. Additionally, financial incentives are available from the government which will help to reduce your start up costs even further. Also, if your solar energy system produces more electricity than you require, you can sell your surplus electricity back to your electrical utility company.

Another advantage to using solar power is that it is not affected by the supply and demand of fuel and therefore not subjected to the ever increasing price of oil. One of the major advantages is that you can realize savings immediately as well as into the future.

Other advantages include the fact that it is a clean, environmentally friendly and renewable power source. It replaces the diminishing supplies of polluting fossil fuels. There is little or no maintenance required and it is also possible to have independent or semi-independent power supplies rather than being dependent on utility companies.

A Few Downsides to Solar Energy

However, there are also some negatives to using solar energy which must be included in any discussion of this alternative power source. The primary disadvantage is clearly the high initial cost of installing a solar system. Also, the solar panels which are an integral part of this power system need a lot of space to be installed.
 
Other significant disadvantages include the necessity to locate the system where there is ample sunlight. And when the weather is overcast or there is much pollution in the air, production of solar energy is hampered.

Solar power is truly incredible and it is certainly worth the consideration of switching our electricity requirements. Not only will you be saving money but you will be helping the environment by not using any fuel. Solar energy technologies do not contribute to the problems related to the collection and the transportation of oil or to the storage of radioactive waste.
